Digitalocean VPS: Confirm Your Email

Once you have confirmed your email address, you must specify a payment method to pay for server charges. At this stage you will not be charged any fee. (1 dollar is taken to confirm your card, then it will be returned to you.)

Step 3:

Once you’ve set a payment method for your account, you can now create a VPS! Click the “Create a new droplet” button and proceed to the steps of creating a new server.

Step 4:

Now it is time to answer the question of how to create a server on Digitalocean. After clicking the button, you will find all the steps on the page you are on.

Step 4-a:

In this step, you need to choose which operating system you want to use on your server. You can select the desired versions of popular Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, Centos, Debian. By clicking on the “Marketplace” button at the top, you can install the ready softwares on your server with a click. For example: WordPress, Discourse, Ghost, OpenVPN etc. I want to create a clean server that we can install the software we want later. For this I’m choosing Ubuntu 18.04 x64.

Step 4-b:

In this step we will choose a size for our server. We can also see how much we pay for our new server. If you’re thinking of creating a blog for yourself on this server or using it for your small business, the $5 package will be more than enough for you. Most hosting companies have dozens of sites on similar servers. If you have a bigger project and you think this plan will be insufficient for you, you can choose a different plan.

Step 4-c:

In this step, we can select a backup for the server we created on Digitalocean. We can back up our server on a low cost (20% of server plan) on a weekly basis. I would definitely recommend this. You can also add extra disk space for your server in this step.

Add backups and block storage

Step 4-d:

We will choose the server location in the current step. In this step, it is usually the right method to choose the location closest to you.

Choose a datacenter

Step 4-e:

Here you can specify additional options for the server. I recommend selecting “Monitoring”. You can also add an SSH key if you want to connect to the server using SSH.

Step 4-f:

Finalize and create your server: We came to the last step of creating a server on Digitalocean. After giving a name to your server (not important), you can create your first server by clicking “create” button. Within minutes you will be ready to use your new server.

Step 1:

You need to connect to your server with a Linux terminal. For this we will use the free program “Putty”. Click here to download Putty.

Step 2:

Open Putty after you download it. Type the IP address of your server in the IP address field as you see in the image below. Then go to the “Window> Selection” tab on the right. And select the “Windows” option on the page that opens. This will allow you to use the right click on the terminal. Finally click on the “Open” button and connect to the server.

Step 3:

A security warning will appear after clicking the Open button. Proceed by clicking “Yes”. In the last step, the first connection with the server will occur and you will be prompted to log in as root and change your password.
